PI Planning

A 2-day event where all ART members plan the next Program Increment together. Modern successor to "Release Planning."

SAFe's signature event. 50–125+ people align on vision, identify dependencies, produce PI Objectives. No direct equivalent elsewhere — other frameworks achieve cross-team alignment through smaller, more frequent events. PI Planning succeeded the older industry term "Release Planning" used in early Scrum-at-scale and XP, which has been replaced by PI Planning in SAFe and by continuous refinement in LeSS and Nexus.
